What makes enclosure work a good laser-welding use case
Repeatable sheet-metal parts, long seams and cosmetic requirements can make handheld laser welding attractive. But poor fit-up or inconsistent upstream cutting/bending can narrow the process window.
Choose by routine gauge, not maximum
Map the 80th–90th percentile of your real jobs: material family, normal thickness and worst recurring joint. Then shortlist only machines with relevant published capability or a validated sample weld.
Production questions before purchase
- Can fixtures hold corner gaps consistently?
- Will filler wire be routine or exceptional?
- Is seam cleaning valuable enough to justify a multi-function head?
- Can your shop support the electrical and laser-safety controls?
Frequently asked questions
Is laser welding good for electrical enclosures?
It can be a strong fit for repeatable thin-sheet seams, but the process must be validated for the material, joint, fit-up and required code/quality standard.
Should cabinet shops prioritize portability?
Often less than mobile repair shops. Fixture quality, uptime, feeder integration and repeatability may be more important.
